Late Archaic artifacts made from lightening whelk shell from central coast archeological sites. While the whelk can be found in firm-bottomed bays and tidal passes with high salinity, many were very likely collected along the beaches of the barrier islands following storms. On the left is an adze probably used for woodworking. On the right is a pendant with a drilled-dot design in a chevron pattern.  Photo by Robert Ricklis.
