A battery of field artillery is parked next to the post guardhouse in this photograph taken at Fort Richardson. A battery consisted of two or more sections, with each section having two "guns," or other artillery pieces.
This battery appears to have two rifled cannon and two Gatling guns, the forerunner of the modern machine gun. The artillery pieces are attached to "limbers," two-wheeled, horse-drawn wagons that pulled the guns into battle. Photo courtesy of Lawrence Jones, III.
