Photo of ecological zones
The three cultural zones identified during testing are marked on the wall of a 6-foot-deep backhoe trench near Testing Block 1. The zones are hard to distinguish by soil color alone, but bits of white mussel shells distinguish Zone 2. That zone was targeted for major excavations, as testing showed that it contained many pieces of stone debris from tool making, pit features, and hearths. Radiocarbon dates of A.D. 685–780 and 1020–1160 indicated that Zone 2 represents occupations during the Late Prehistoric period.
