This nut was a good source for fatty oil, an important part of prehistoric people's diet. These nuts are still green, but once ripe, there is a very hard black walnut inside. However, black walnuts have very hard shells and are difficult to process—they are, as they say, "a tough nut to crack!" Special pitted stones called "nutting stones" were used to cradle these small nuts and extract the fatty nut meat. Photo courtesy of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
