WPA workers used fresh-cut wooden stakes to lay out a 5-foot grid over the entire mound. These 5-foot squares were the basic excavation units and each was assigned an alpha-numeric code. Maintaining this grid system as the excavations progressed must have been quite a challenge. TARL Archives.
