Sotol and other desert plants growing in the uplands of the Lower Pecos were used in many ways. Dried sotol flower stalks were used as firewood and for tool-making, the thorn-lined fibrous leaves were stripped and used to weave sandals, and the hearts of the plant were baked for days and turned to sugary carbohydrate.
