Security may have been a concern for the Williams family, despite living in relative isolation. Three different padlocks and four keys were recovered from excavations, but only one of the locks is shown here. Two of the keys in the photo are identical, so they only represent three locks but the locks are too corroded to match the keys and locks. The Williams family could have used these locks while they lived on the farm, perhaps to lock large storage trunks that contained personal possessions or to lock and chain a wagon. It is also possible that one or more of the locks might have been placed on the structure when the family abandoned the house and left the farm around 1905.
