This map shows the approximate locations of the rural Bear Creek and Rose Colony communities. The Rose Colony school was founded in 1877, and the area coalesced into a freedmen community. After 1880, the town of Manchaca emerged along the railroad and eventually subsumed Rose Colony, but the latter remained a strong African American neighborhood. The base image is a 1914 Travis County School District Map.
