Page from Hughes notes on a field trip with Floyd Studer on May 23, 1960 to northeastern Gray County. One of Studer's many rancher friends had taken him to a site along Cantonment Creek where a burned pithouse was eroding out of a cutbank. On this day, Hughes and Studer partly uncovered and documented what proved to be a Plains Village house. This was one of many sites in the eastern Panhandle that Hughes investigated.
