More than 15,000 brass pins were found in the main cargo hold, some still contained in a barrel containing other trade items. Made from short lengths of thin brass wire twisted together to form a head, the French pins were a labor-intensive and costly creation until the early 19th century, when production was mechanized. Indians used them to decorate their clothing.
