A pair of brass dividers, with tips missing, was found in the chest. The ball joint connects two straight legs that end with grooves for the insertion of iron tips. The dividers from the Belle chest are known as friction style dividers, or sometimes as the true compass. Generally, brass dividers were used for navigation and drafting, taking measurements on maps.
