bone
The Caddo wore beautiful necklaces crafted from shell, including some shell from the far-away Gulf of Mexico. The shell disc in the center has been engraved with a sharp tool. It was worn on a cord around the neck and was a religious symbol.
Chinesi
In this imaginary portrait, the grand Chinesi, supreme leader of all the Caddo groups, is shown wearing ornaments found in Caddo sites. Notice his earspools and necklaces made of shell.
earspools
"Earspools," or ear ornaments, were worn by both Caddo men and women members of the most important famlies. Made of stone or pottery, they were sometimes covered with sheet copper and probably carved wood. The earspools often were quite large— nearly two inches wide! They had to be held in place by a strap that went over the head and was hidden under a feather headdress. These were worn only on special occaision for rituals and festivals.
bone
Caddo women may have worn finely carved bone hair pins as ornaments or fasteners in their hair.
