Decorated brownware jar recovered from the Old Socorro Mission. Brownware was the most common ceramic type found at the site, and was likely made by its native or mestizo inhabitants. This jar's depiction of a human head on the body of a lion is what art historians refer to as a "Grotesque," and may be an expression of the Catholic faith. To the left above the figure is what may be the church's "sacred heart." TARL Archives.
