Hindes remembered a conversation that she had with E.H. (Smitty) Schmiedlin, an Archeological Steward with the Texas Historical Commission and long time resident of Victoria, who had asked her to look at a site with him on the Guadalupe River in Riverside Park in Victoria. Schmiedlin thought that artifacts he had helped excavate at the site in 1978 were earlier than those of other Spanish Colonial historic sites in the Victoria County area with the exception of site 41VT4, the site of Presidio Nuestra Senora del Loreto founded at the location of LaSalle's Fort St. Louis. Could this site be the second location of the mission detailed in some archival records? This evidence, coupled with map work, set the stage for archeological inquiries and subsequent reinterpretation of the Victoria site. PDF file of TAS article Hindes et al-1999.
