Ring Midden Sequence 2: The same ring midden at site 41CX131 after it has been bisected by excavation. Notice the large, carbon-stained central cooking pit. The layer of rocks in the center represents the last baking event. The irregular ring around the central area is composed mainly of large, pristine cooking rocks that were never used. In most ring middens, the ring is composed mainly of fist-sized, fire-fractured, spent cooking stones. TARL archives.
